India has set up ambitious goals for the expansion of renewables to 500 GW by 2030 for its significant contribution to meet the Climate Goals. In order to facilitate an efficient and safe system for integration of these variable renewables, the flexible operation of Thermal Power Plants becomes more and more important.
Therefore, Flexibilization of Indian Power Plants has been identified as a key topic a special Task Force under the Chairmanship of Director (Operations), NTPC was constituted with members from Central Electricity Authority (CEA), POSOCO (Power System Operation Corporation) and BHEL (Bharat Heavy Electricals) . The EEC (Excellence Enhancement Center For Indian Power Sector) coordinates the work of task force that is supported on the German side by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and vgbe energy e., Germany.
One of the key activities of the Task Force has been the demonstration of the technical feasibility of Flexible Power Plant Operation. The flexibility study / test runs at several Indian Power Plants were conducted by Indian and German experts namely NTPC’s Dadri, Simhadri Power Plant, Maithon Power Plant Operated by Tata Power and at DVC Andal Power Plant. Moreover, the IGEF Task Force has also started to work on the implementation of flexibility trainings and to compile international best practices for the repurposing of Thermal Power Plants.
In order to transfer the knowledge gained in the course of these activities and to intensify the exchange of experiences, Excellence Enhancement Centre for Indian Power Sector (EEC) is organizing a technical workshop in association with Central Electricity Authority, Indo German Energy Forum (SO) and VGBe Germany on October 16, 2024 at Hotel The Residency Towers, 115, Sir Thyagaraya Road, Chennai 600017 The programme schedule is attached at Annexure-“A”
