Flexibilisation of Thermal Power Plants for operation on low PLFs

May 2016 - onwards

In the Indo – German Energy Forum sub group – I, meeting held in May, 2016 & it was decided to constitute a task force under the Chairman ship of Director (Operation), NTPC Ltd. on ‘Adaptation of Thermal Power Plants to Fluctuating Renewable Energies’ with members from CEA, POSOCO, EEC & IGEF/VGB. EEC was entrusted with coordinating the various activities of the task force as member secretary of the task force. The task force decided to carry out the technical study with the support of VGB, Germany on two power plants of NTPC namely National Capital Power Station, Dadri & Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station. The same was completed in September, 2017 and the recommendation of the task force were submitted to Ministry of Power in October,2017. Ministry of Power has accepted the committee report and as a follow up to the same, CEA is working on the implementation plan for the Thermal Power Plants in country. Under the aegis of Task force EEC has also organized National Seminar on Flexibility Operation of Thermal Power Plants in December,2017.
The document “ Required Training For Flexible Operation of Coal Fired Power Plants in India “ prepared with the support of KWS, Germany has been submitted to Ministry of Power in December, 2017.

NTPC with the support of EEC/VGB/Siemens has carried out in June 2018 the test runs at Dadri unit no 6 to observe the flexible operation capability of coal fired power plants down to 40% load. The tests have shown encouraging results. The report is under preparation.

EEC with the support of VGB has prepared a Technical document "Flexibility Toolbox – Measures For Flexible Operation of Coal- Fired Power Plants." And the same has been released by Shri Ravindra Kumar Verma, Chairperson, CEA in June 2018.
